When shopping for mud-boots (‘tis the season) for our little girls this weekend, nostalgia flowed when seeing Tingley rubber boots on store shelves. Appearing generally unchanged, these boots looked like what I wore as a kid and many generations before me.

So, what’s the story with Tingley boots?

Beginning with the Bicycle

Tingley Rubber began with a simple mission: be the best bicycle tire plug company around. Humble beginnings for this, now, 5th generation family business that has innovated and grown to offer a full line of protective, liquidproof footwear and clothing.

Charles O. Tingley, an industrious businessman, founded the company in 1896 and grew his market share of rubber bicycle tire plugs by riding a bike from New Jersey to Buffalo to Pennsylvania, and back. Not only was this a successful marketing method, it also put Charles in tune with what his customers needed. This led to Tingley expanding to automobile tire patch kits and fender splash guards.

With a growing rubber company, Tingley launched into what would make it a well-known company for 125 years. The development of the first seamless, unlined rubber overshoe. The overshoe was designed to slip over existing shoes, providing waterproof protection without the need for a completely new pair of boots.

This clever invention allowed farmers to protect their feet from mud and moisture, making their work in the fields and dairy barns more comfortable and efficient.
